What are the different types of blind mount?

Inside mount: In this type of mount the roman blind is fitted exactly into the inside the window frame or casing. They provide a very sleek and clean look and let you showcase the window molding if any. This occupies far less space allowing you more room to use other furniture.

Outside mount: Outside mount is when you mount the roman blinds outside of the window frame. This is done if you want to completely arrest the light that comes through the window. When you mount them outside you also make the window look large and can arrest all the light that passes through the window. This is also a safer option if you are not too sure of the inside measurements.

Now let’s get started with the measurements.

What You Will Need

- Steel Tape Measure

- Step Ladder (if necessary)

- Pencil and note

Helpful Hints Before You Begin Measuring for Roman Shades

- Use a Steel Tape Measure: For the most accurate measurements.

- Follow the Width by Height Format (W x H): Always record width followed by height and mark them as such.

- Measure to the Nearest 1/8 Inch: Never round up or down to the nearest half or whole inch.

- Measure Each Window Individually: Even if they look alike, windows can vary in size.

How to Measure for Inside Mount Roman Shades

Inside mount Roman shades are installed inside the window frame or casing, providing a sleek, clean look that showcases your window size and moldings. Here’s how to measure for inside mount Roman shades:

  1. Measure the Depth: Measure from the front of the opening to the glass to ensure your window recess meets the minimum depth requirement for an inside mount. Refer to the Mounting Requirements section for your chosen Roman shade.
  2. Measure the Width: Record the width at the top, middle, and bottom of your window opening. Circle the narrowest measurement – this is the number you submit for your window’s width.
  3. Measure the Height: Measure the height in three places: left, center, and right. Circle the tallest measurement - this is the number you submit for your window’s height.
  4. Order at the Exact Opening Size: No deductions needed; the factory will take deductions in production.
  5. Double Check Your Measurements: Ensure they follow the width by height format (W x H).

How to Measure for Outside Mount Roman Shades

Outside mount Roman shades are mounted on the window molding or wall above your window. They are a good choice if an inside mount is not possible due to window depth or obstructions around the window frame. Here’s how to measure for outside mount Roman shades:

  1. Check the Mounting Requirements: Ensure you have enough flat surface for mounting hardware.
  2. Determine the Width: If you have window trim, measure to the far edges of the trim from left to right. If not, add two to three inches on each side of your window for light gap coverage and privacy, then measure the width between these points.
  3. Determine the Height: If you have a protruding window sill, start at the sill and measure three inches beyond the top of the window opening for mounting hardware. If not, start two inches below the sill for maximum coverage and measure three inches beyond the top of the window opening.
  4. Double Check Your Measurements: Ensure they follow the width by height format (W x H). Remember, outside mount Roman shades will be made to the exact specified size.

How to decide the no. of blinds needed for a window

The maximum width that can be achieved for a blind is 58". Incase of a window with a width wider than 58", you will need more than one blind.

Incase of a wider window, split the complete width into 2 blinds of same width. If the width of the individual blinds is more than 58", split the complete window width into 3 blinds.

For example:

Window width is 60"- Opt for two 30" width blinds

Window width is 110"- Opt for two 55" width blinds

Window width is 162"- Opt for three 54" width blinds
